Time

In a couple of weeks, I would turn a year and a half old in the financial services industry. I awed my self for "turning my back" from the marketing-centric FMCG industry where I spent eight strong years of my professional life, taking a great leap by joining Sun Life Financial. With only my faith and spunk in tow, I leaped without knowing if it will be right for me --- if it will bring as much growth and fulfillment as the industry I left behind. That is water under the bridge now.

What currently awes me are the big and small things I was able to learn and unlearn, conquer and let go, build and re-build, with this great leap. In a matter of a year and half:

1. I learned more about business and finances. I do not skip the business and economic sections of the broadsheets anymore.

2. I was able to review my financial situation and take charge now of managing it armed with more confidence in my decisions.

3. I appreciate the value of insurance and sound investments.

4. I realized that my first career need not be my last.

5. The discipline and competencies I learned from FMCG still holds water in the industry SLF belongs. If I keep these competencies, it can actually be a compelling differentiator with my colleagues.

6. I learned that building a career is not synonymous to "a rat race".

7. It hit me hard that some aspects of my life has been stumped with my devotion to my career. It is about time these get the much needed attention.

8. I finally embraced the idea that fulfillment and growth does not depend on the company but on myself.

9. I realized that there are other options to provide for the family than slave over an eight to eight job.

10. I finally found the time to show gratitude to my family and friends who have been my source of support and inspiration in my life.

This set of learnings are very timely because a few weeks ago, I entered a new decade in my life. Yes I am 30 now. Needless to say, I need such wisdom and resolve to arm me with the experiences and challenges this new chapter of my life will bring. My 20s was a roller coaster ride. I will be a fool to expect anything less in my 30s...
